"Televisions are the fourth largest household energy user and growing, according to a new report on residential energy use in Aust between 1986 and 2020. The reports said a 56% increase in residential energy consumption between 1990 to 2020" would result in "a significant growth in GHG emissions", based on a 61% increase in the number of occupied homes. "Over the same period, total residential floor area is set to rise from 685 million square metres to almost 1,682 million square metres, an increase of 145%," it said. Residential energy consumption grew from about 299 petajoules (PJ) in 1990 to about 402 PJ in 2008. It is projected to increase to 467 PJ by 2020 under the current trends.
Electrical appliance energy consumption would increase by 4.7% each year, almost matching the energy demand for space heating, the report said. The report is the second of two produced by Energy Efficient Strategies Pty Ltd for the Fed Govt."
