Protected area gaps for threatened Australian animals identified from recovery plans

Source: WWF
We report here for the first time, an assessment of gaps in protection of habitats for terrestrial and freshwater animal species considered threatened by habitat loss or degradation, based on an analysis of available recovery plans for those species. Of 402 animal species currently listed as threatened under federal law, only 29% or 115 species could reliably be classified as habitat-constrained using information contained in recovery plans. Almost all were vertebrates, with most major vertebrate classes represented."
