"About 40% of Australia can be classified as wilderness but these areas need protection from threats to the natural environment, according to a new study. The Wild Australia Program’s study, by scientists from international conservation organisations the Pew Environment Group and The Nature Conservancy, identifies 12 major regions of Australia that remain largely undamaged by humans. The regions identified in the study are: Cape York Pensinsula Tropical Savanna; Daly Basin-Arnhem Land Tropical Savanna; Kimberley Tropical Savanna; Carpentaria Tropical Savanna; Victoria Plains Tropical Savanna; Great Sandy-Tanami Deserts; Central Ranges; Gibson Desert; Simpson-Strzelecki Desert; Great Victoria Desert; Nullarbor Plains; and Great Western Woodlands."
